The first performance of Messiah took place in Dublin on April 13, 1742. Less than a year later, Handel gave the London premiere at Convent Garden. It was initially not well received due to the performance venue (a sacred work being performed in a profane theater!) and the advertising that referred to it as “musical entertainment.” In 1750, Messiah began to be presented in annual performances for a London charity at the local Foundling Hospital and the public embraced the work. Messiah is composed in three parts (a form that Haydn would duplicate in his composition The Creation). The first part centers on the prophesy of the coming of a Messiah and then on Christ’s Nativity. The second part focuses on Christ’s suffering and death while the third part affirms the Christian faith with moments from the Book of Revelation. Our performance will include the complete Christmas section while augmented by significant portions of parts II & III.
