Brothers and sisters of Wayne Presbyterian Church,
The Associate Pastor Nominating Committee (APNC) is pleased to present to the congregation the candidate that we have called to become our new Executive Pastor.
The candidate, Rev. Dr. Richard Miller, will preach at the 8:30 and 9:30 a.m. services this Sunday, January 26, and the annual meeting will immediately follow the 9:30 service. Please join us for worship, attend the annual meeting and participate in the process of calling a new pastor for this important leadership position.
The APNC has been meeting weekly since early April 2019 to call two new pastors – an Executive Pastor (EP) and Program Pastor (PP). The EP is a new position for us, and was established to better balance the work and gifts of the Senior Pastor (SP), who is the spiritual and pastoral leader of the church, the EP, who is the administrative and congregational leader who reports to the SP, and the PP, who is the director of our active programs and related leadership, reporting to the EP. This new structure will provide a mutually supportive and clearly defined pastoral leadership model that will enable our church to successfully reach its goals set forth in the Mission Study conducted in 2018.
Since April 2019, our committee has met more than 50 times, thoroughly reviewed the Mission Study, studied the pastor job descriptions developed by the Personnel Committee and approved by Session, developed Ministry Information Forms (MIFs) for the EP and PP positions, posted the forms on the Presbytery pastoral recruitment platform, reached out to members of our extensive clergy network, contacted leading divinity schools, reviewed well over 100 Personal Information Forms (PIFs) or resumes, conducted extensive interviews and reference checks, listened to many sermons and invited finalists to meet here in Wayne. We could not be more thankful for God’s provision of a candidate with such a vital skill set, deep experience, rich spiritual perspective, and relational gifts.
After extensive interviews, reference checks and Presbytery COM (Committee on Ministry) approval, we are pleased to introduce Rev. Dr. Richard Miller for congregational approval as our new Executive Pastor. Dr. Miller was most recently Pastor/Head of Staff at First Presbyterian Church, Davenport, Iowa for 10 years. Prior to that position, he served as Associate Executive Pastor at Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church. He has also held associate pastor positions in administration, education, youth, young adults and family ministries in Texas and Washington. He received a Master of Divinity degree from Princeton Theological Seminary and Doctor of Ministry from Dubuque Theological Seminary. Dr. Miller brings abundant skills and experience leading large congregations and complex operations. He is also a deeply spiritual and relational leader, making him a particularly outstanding candidate for this position.
Dr. Miller is married to Dr. Juleann Miller, RN, PhD, who is chair of the Nursing Faculty at St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa. They have two grown children, Jordan and Carly. Please join us for Slow Cooker Sunday and a reception after the congregational meeting to meet and welcome Richard and Juleann to WPC.
The APNC will continue the process of interviewing candidates for the open Program Pastor position. Dr. Miller will be an important contributor to the process of selecting a strong candidate and completing our pastoral recruitment process. Please see the church website for ongoing search updates. You may find job descriptions for the EP and PP positions at www.waynepres.org/jobs.
And as always, feel free to reach out to the APNC at firstname.lastname@example.org or by contacting any of our members directly.
