14I hope to come to you soon, but I am writing these instructions to you so that, 15 if I am delayed, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and support of the truth.

Becoming a Deacon at Wayne Presbyterian Church

A CALL TO SERVICE

Being a Deacon at Wayne Presbyterian is a meaningful and rewarding call to service. Deacons are the “servants” and “caregivers” of the congregation, offering support to individuals facing life’s many challenges. Whether members are recovering from surgery, grieving a loss, feeling lonely, or enduring illness, they welcome the compassionate care provided by our Deacons.

In this role, Deacons truly become the hands and heart of the Church, extending our ministry of care. Serving as a Deacon is not only a privilege and blessing but also an opportunity for spiritual growth and fellowship. Deacons build deeper relationships with fellow church members and grow in understanding the burdens people carry and how the Church can help.

DEACONS: THE MINISTRY OF COMPASSION AND SERVICE

Deacon Defined: The ministry of deacon as set forth in Scripturee is one of compassion, witness, and service, sharing in the redeeming love of Jesus Christ for the poor, the hungry, the sick, the lost, the friendless, the oppressed, those burdened by unjust policies or structures, or anyone in distress. Persons of spiritual character, honest repute, exemplary lives, brotherly and sisterly love, sincere compassion, and sound judgment should be chosen for this ministry.

From the Book of Order G-2.0201

The Ministry of a Deacon

As outlined in Scripture, the ministry of a Deacon centers on compassion, witness, and service, sharing in the redeeming love of Jesus Christ. Deacons are called to care for those who are poor, hungry, sick, lonely, oppressed, and burdened by unjust structures. The qualities essential for this role include  spiritual character, honesty, compassion, love, and sound judgment.

Steps to becoming a deacon

Deacons are nominated by Church members through the Nominating Committee. Before starting their term, new Deacons and Elders participate in training sessions led by pastors.

Deacons are then voted upon in a congregational meeting and then ordained and installed.

Deacons serve under the leadership of our Senior Pastor, Rev. Ryan Balsan and with the support of fellow Deacons.

Term of Service: Deacons serve for three years, attending monthly meetings (except in July and August).

Eligibility: To serve as a Deacon, one must be an active member of the congregation for at least one year and demonstrate support for the Church’s mission and work.
