In most Presbyterian denominations, including the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), the process is democratic, and the congregation has the final vote on whether to approve the proposed candidates for leadership positions. The work of the nominating committee is essential in shaping the spiritual and administrative leadership of the church.

In a Presbyterian church, the nominating committee plays a crucial role in identifying and recommending individuals for leadership positions within the congregation. This committee is responsible for discerning and selecting candidates for offices such as elders, deacons, and sometimes trustees.

The process typically involves:

Prayer & Discernment

Seeking God's Guidance

The committee spends time in prayer and thoughtful consideration to seek God’s guidance in selecting candidates who are spiritually mature and dedicated to serving the church.

Seeking Input from the Congregation

Seeking the Congregation's Guidance

The committee may solicit nominations from church members, considering input from the congregation to ensure that the leadership reflects the diversity and needs of the church body.

Evaluating Candidates

Careful Consideration of Candidates

Members of the committee carefully evaluate potential nominees, considering their faith, character, skills, and commitment to the mission and values of the church.

Presenting a slate of Nominees

Once candidates have been selected, the nominating committee presents a slate of nominees to the congregation. These nominees are usually voted on at a congregational meeting.

2025-2026 Nominating Committee Members

At Wayne Pres, we have two groups of servant-leaders: Deacons and Elders. These individuals embody the transformation of faith into action and the practice of turning listening into doing.

Deacons serve as the caregivers of the congregation, and this role is both a privilege and a blessing. It offers an opportunity for spiritual growth and fellowship, as well as the chance to build deeper connections with other church members through serving together.

Our Elders lead the ongoing activities and functions of the church through the Session, our governing body.

The Session consists of devoted church members who have been elected and ordained into this leadership role. These committed individuals are deeply involved in life-giving work and decision-making that benefits our congregation, and they experience the rewards of their faithful service.

2025-2026 Nominating Committee - Recommendation for Nominees

Our congregation is called on to annually elect members who are compassionate in spirit and demonstrate leadership to three-year terms as Elders (7), Deacons (14 adult + 2 youth), and Stewards (responsible for the counting of our weekly offering).   We will also elect members for the 2025-26 Nominating Committee.

More details about the roles of the Elders and Deacons are available in the church governance section of the WPC website – https://waynepres.org/governance-officers/

If you have any questions about these roles, or are interested in getting involved at WPC but are uncertain about how you might contribute your talent, please reach out to any member of our 2025-2026 Nominating Committee.
