Things that we have heard and known, that our fathers have told us. We will not hide them from their children, but tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might, and the wonders that he has done.
Psalm 78:3-4
Celebrating 150 Years
Glorifying God
Wayne Presbyterian Church boasts a rich history dating back to its founding in 1870, when the cornerstone of the original church building, now affectionately known as chapel hall, was laid. This impressive stone structure, crowned with a majestic 108-foot steeple, served as a focal point in the burgeoning community of Wayne, which was then a small town on the cusp of growth and development. The growth of the congregation prompted the construction of the new sanctuary, a project that commenced in 1893 and culminated in a magnificent worship space capable of seating 600 individuals. With its soaring vaulted ceilings and sturdy stone walls, the sanctuary stood as a testament to the dedication and vision of the church’s founders. Over the years, the sanctuary underwent renovations, including the addition of the exquisite stained-glass windows, complimenting the original Tiffany-style windows that adorned the space.
As the needs of the congregation evolved, so too did the physical infrastructure of the church. In 1939, an education wing was added to accommodate the expanding educational programs of the church. This wing underwent a transformative renovation in 2002, emerging as a modern administrative hub housing clergy offices, meeting rooms, and a spacious rehearsal facility.
During the transformative decade of the 1960s, a three-story Christian Education building was erected adjacent to Chapel Hall, providing ample space for classrooms, a reception parlor, an institutional kitchen, and the church library. The late 20th century also saw the construction of the Connector, a light-filled addition that seamlessly joined the sanctuary and education building, creating a cohesive and inviting space for worship and fellowship.
In the spirit of continual renewal and community outreach, Wayne Presbyterian Church embarked on a series of capital campaigns to fund major maintenance and construction projects. One such endeavor enabled the church to expand its reach by acquiring New Spirit Presbyterian Church in Southwest Philadelphia in 2013. Following extensive renovations, the transformed space, now known as The Common Place, serves as a vibrant faith-based educational outreach and community center, embodying the church’s commitment to serving others.
Central to the worship experience at Wayne is the awe-inspiring four-manual, eighty-seven rank Austin pipe organ, which has been a cherished centerpiece since its installation in 1963. Over the years, enhancements such as the addition of a twenty-four-rank antiphonal organ and a Van Bergen electronic carillon have enriched the musical tapestry of worship. A new organ console, installed in 2003, further enhances the capabilities of this magnificent instrument, ensuring that the musical legacy of Wayne Presbyterian Church continues to resonate for generations to come.
